Successful koi keeping focuses on water maintenance, not constant attention to the fish. When you maintain water quality correctly, koi look after themselves. Your main responsibility is to feed them properly. Avoid overfeeding, and never feed koi when the water temperature falls below 10 °C. Uneaten food breaks down in the pond and turns into protein waste, just like koi excrement. Koi digest only about 65% of their food, leaving roughly 35% to pollute the water. In addition, koi release ammonia directly into the pond through urination, which further degrades water quality.
Essential Filtration, Water Changes, and Proper Backwashing
To control protein waste and ammonia levels, you must use effective biological filtration and ultraviolet clarifiers. A weekly 10% water change is essential to help remove these harmful substances. You must also remove debris from the pond floor to prevent parasite breeding. Never assume that clear water means healthy water. Clear water simply shows that the filtration system is working. Many pond owners believe they do not need to backwash when the water looks clear—this is incorrect. Any waste trapped in the sand filter must be completely removed. During backwashing, you must stir the sand and repeat the process two to three times to fully clean the filter media.

Additives such as koi salt and bio boost are available at an additional but minimal cost. Depending on pond size, weekly maintenance takes between 20 and 60 minutes.
